How to Test Used Game Boy Cartridges Properly

A Game Boy cartridge can look immaculate in a listing photo and still fail at the moment that familiar Nintendo logo should appear. Oxidised contacts, tired save batteries, damaged pins and replacement shells are all common in the second-hand market. Learning how to test used Game Boy cartridges properly protects your console, your collection and the value of a game you may later want to trade or sell.

The good news is that most problems are straightforward to identify. You do not need a workshop full of equipment, but you do need to test methodically. A quick power-on is a useful start; it is not the whole inspection.

Start with the right console and a clean setup

Test each cartridge on the hardware it was made for wherever possible. Original Game Boy games work on the Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Colour, Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP. Game Boy Colour titles need a colour-capable machine to access their full functionality, while Game Boy Advance games require a GBA-family console or a Nintendo DS or DS Lite.

For serious testing, an original console is preferable. It gives you the clearest picture of how a cartridge behaves on the hardware collectors actually use. A Game Boy Colour game that works in a modern third-party handheld but struggles in an original GBC may still need attention.

Before blaming a cartridge, make sure the console is known to work. Test it with a game you trust, use fresh batteries or a reliable power supply, and check the cartridge slot is free from loose debris. A dirty console slot can create the same boot issues as dirty game contacts.

Inspect the cartridge before switching on

Start with the shell. Look for cracks around the screw post, corners that do not sit flush, heavy warping and signs of moisture exposure. A little age-related wear is normal on a game that has survived school bags, bedrooms and loft storage since the 1990s. Deep gouges, melted plastic or a rattle inside the shell deserve closer attention.

Check the label next. Authentic labels vary by region and production run, so avoid judging a game on label colour alone. Instead, look for an even cut, sensible print quality, correct artwork and a label that fits the shell cleanly. A very glossy, blurry or poorly aligned label can indicate a replacement. That does not automatically make the cartridge unusable, but it affects collector appeal and should be described honestly when buying or selling.

Turn the cartridge over and inspect the gold contacts. They should be broadly clean and even, with no green corrosion, black residue or obvious scratches running across multiple contact lines. Light dullness is extremely common and often responds well to careful cleaning. Missing plating, deep wear or bent internal contact material is more serious.

If a screw looks damaged or the shell does not match the expected moulding, the game may have been opened. Again, that is not always a problem. Many genuine cartridges have had a save battery replaced, which can be a positive. The key question is whether the repair was tidy and whether the board inside is appropriate for the game.

Clean contacts safely

For many used cartridges, proper contact cleaning is the difference between a frustrating non-booter and a perfectly reliable game. Use 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol, a cotton bud or lint-free swab, and gentle pressure. Wipe across the contacts until the swab no longer lifts grime, then allow the alcohol to evaporate fully before inserting the cartridge.

Do not use water, household cleaning sprays, abrasive paper or a pencil eraser. Abrasive methods can remove the contact plating and create a short-lived improvement at the cost of long-term reliability. Blowing into the cartridge is also best avoided. Moisture from breath can leave residue on the contacts and inside the console slot.

If the game still fails after cleaning, do not repeatedly force it in and out of the console. Check the contacts under strong light, then test on another known-working compatible system. Consistent failure across two consoles points towards the cartridge rather than the handheld.

Test used Game Boy cartridges beyond the title screen

A successful boot proves only that the console can read enough data to start the game. Let the title screen appear, then begin a new game and play for at least ten to fifteen minutes. Watch for graphical corruption, random freezes, missing sound channels, resets when the cartridge is touched, or screens that load with garbled tiles.

For Game Boy and Game Boy Colour games, gently but carefully apply minimal pressure to the cartridge once it is running. You are not trying to make it fail, only checking whether a minor movement causes a reset or corrupted display. A stable cartridge should continue running normally. If it cuts out, the issue may be dirty contacts, worn connector plating, a cracked solder joint or a failing cartridge slot.

On Game Boy Advance games, test the shoulder-button area and both sides of the shell while playing. GBA cartridges sit more shallowly than earlier Game Boy carts, so poor shells or worn contacts can reveal themselves when the console is handled normally.

It is worth checking several parts of the game rather than assuming the opening sequence represents the whole cartridge. Start a level, open menus, trigger sound effects, save progress and reload. RPGs, Pokémon games and larger adventure titles are particularly worth testing for a longer session because faults may emerge only when certain memory banks are accessed.

Check the save function carefully

A dead save battery is one of the most common issues with older Game Boy cartridges. Many Game Boy and Game Boy Colour titles use a small internal battery to retain saved data. Some games use the battery for real-time clock features as well, meaning a Pokémon Gold, Silver or Crystal cartridge can save normally while its clock-based events no longer function correctly.

To test saving, create a new save file, play long enough to make it meaningful, then save using the game’s normal menu. Switch the console off, wait a minute, power it back on and confirm the file remains. For extra confidence, leave it for several hours or overnight and check once more.

A game that loses its save is not necessarily a poor purchase. Battery replacement is a standard preservation repair, especially for games with otherwise clean boards and labels. For collectors, though, it is worth knowing whether the battery is original, newly replaced or already failing. A replacement battery can improve usability, but an untidy repair may reduce confidence in the cartridge.

Game Boy Advance saves need a slightly different approach. Many GBA games use flash memory and do not rely on a battery for ordinary saves. Others use an internal battery for clock functions, and a few titles use battery-backed saves. Read any on-screen battery warning closely and test save retention rather than relying on assumptions based on the cartridge alone.

Spot authenticity concerns without jumping to conclusions

Counterfeit Game Boy games exist across the entire range, but they are especially common for Pokémon, Zelda, Metroid and other high-demand Nintendo releases. A fake cartridge may boot and play, which is why functionality and authenticity should be treated as separate checks.

Compare the shell shape, label layout, cartridge colour and rear moulding to known genuine examples from the same region. For Game Boy Advance games, a legitimate translucent or coloured shell should have the appropriate finish and fit. Many replicas have softer plastic, unusually bright colours, rough seams or labels that are slightly undersized.

The most reliable inspection involves opening the cartridge with the correct security screwdriver and examining the circuit board. Genuine boards typically have clean manufacturing marks, proper chip placement and game-specific board codes. Reproduction boards may use a generic layout, a small black epoxy blob, poor soldering or components that do not match the original game’s needs.

Opening a cartridge is best reserved for buyers who are comfortable doing it safely. Never prise a shell apart with a flathead screwdriver, and do not open a game simply out of curiosity if its condition is already excellent. If you are selling, clear photos of the shell, label, contacts and board - where appropriate - build more trust than vague claims of authenticity.

Know when a fault is worth repairing

Not every faulty cartridge belongs in the reject pile. Dirty contacts, failed save batteries and damaged shells are often repairable. A genuine loose Pokémon cartridge with a dead battery can still be a very worthwhile collector purchase if the label, board and contacts are sound.

The trade-off changes when a game has heavy corrosion, a damaged board, lifted traces or repeated freezing after thorough cleaning. Repair may be possible, but it becomes a specialist job and should be priced accordingly. For a common title, replacement is often more sensible. For a scarce Game Boy release, professional repair can be part of preserving a piece of gaming history.

When you buy used, ask whether the game has been tested, how long it was played, whether saving was checked and whether any repair has been carried out. Specific answers matter. “Tested and working” is more useful when it means the seller has confirmed booting, gameplay and save retention rather than simply seeing a title screen.

A careful test routine turns a second-hand cartridge from a gamble into a known quantity. Whether you are building a boxed Game Boy shelf, hunting a childhood favourite or preparing games for their next collector, the extra few minutes of testing are part of treating these small pieces of Nintendo history with the care they deserve.
