Why Play Lawnmower Man Sega CD?
Based on the feature film of 1992, The Lawnmower Man is a set of minigames that are based on the groundbreaking virtual reality sequences that were featured in the film. The storyline is akin to the main battle - the player controls Doctor. Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) when he ventures into cyberspace to face the evil digital God Jobe (Jeff Fahey) who he invented.
As the ruler of his virtual realm, Jobe shifts and manipulates the virtual world into a variety of tests for the player. These include digital IQ tests as well as chase sequences that require precision timing to jump and duck as well as tunnel flights as part of the virtual planes featured in the film. The characters from the film are also transformed by Jobe to be willing henchmen and are to be defeated by the player through a series of events that are quick in time.
All of the sequences have been pre-rendered and then streamed off on the disc in movie-like files. Despite the computer-generated images the game actually operates as an interactive film. This means that all the limitations of an interactive film remain in place. The controls are very basic for every minigame. Failure to click the correct button at the correct time typically leads to a lengthy "game over" video with no branches.
Reception of the Game
When reviewing GamePro's review of the Genesis edition, GamePro criticized the game's quality graphics and controls vary throughout the game, however, they praised the game's blend with "above average" run-n-shoot adventure, "hypnotic" first-person flying along with "brain-teasing" puzzles.
GamePro stated it was a good game. Sega CD version makes good use of the system's audio as well as graphical capabilities, but the puzzle-based game is dull. Electronic Gaming Monthly has given it a 5.6 /10 commenting the following "The variety of games is a good option, but the overall appeal of the whole theme seems tired by now."
The year 1996 was the first time Computer Gaming World declared Lawnmower Man the 42nd most sluggish computer game ever created.
